After 9/11 Rachel, a native New Yorker, moves to Maine when her husband, Simon, takes a job at Canterbury College. Rachel's Jewish parents, her WASPy in-laws and her glamorous best friend are puzzled by the move, but her sassy five-year-old daughter, Rose, loves the new life in the beautiful coastal landscape.
Despite promises to devote more time to family, Simon neglects his homesick wife and works long hours. Their marriage starts to unravel, and Rachel suspects her husband of having an affair with the charming babysitter.
Rachel is lonely, jealous and discouraged when her childhood sweetheart, Theo, steps in to fill the gap left by Simon. Theo helps her rediscover the sexuality abandoned for parenting, and he is wonderful with her child.
Rachel is also welcomed into a sisterhood of friendship. She learns to balance career and family in the melting pot of mixed religions and clashing cultures.
Just when Rachel thinks she might find happiness in Maine, her daughter vanishes. Rachel turns to Simon to face her suspicions and her fears.
